Best Bikes for Seniors

Monday, October 1, 2018 by Ziggy's

When fitted properly on a bike, seniors and older adults with mobility issues can take advantage of all the benefits of biking. Not only is it a low-impact form of exercise that is easy on the knees, wrists, and back, biking promotes physical and mental health, prevents chronic disease, and can be a social activity for older adults of all abilities. If you or a loved one is interested in leisurely, recreational riding for fitness and fun, a great option is a “comfort bike."

Comfort Bikes

A comfort bike is exactly what it sounds like: a bicycle styled to maximize comfort. Comfort bikes feature a stable, laid-back riding position that is easy on aging bodies. Riders sit comfortably upright and put little weight the handlebars, which eases lower-back strain and reduces pressure on the wrists and hands. Comfort bikes usually come with wide grips for hand support, plush saddles and seatposts with shock-absorbing suspension. They also come with wide tires for a smooth ride and offer fewer gears for ease of use. Some popular brands of comfort bikes are explored in the next section.

Electra Townie

Based on more traditional cruisers, the Electra Townie is a popular model for adults of all ages. The Townie offers flat-foot technology, which allows riders to get a full-leg extension when pedaling, but keeps the seat in a lower position. This means that, when at a stop, riders can easily put their feet down flat on the ground while seated, which is a great safety feature for older riders. This sets a new standard in comfort and control, making a bicycle that is accessible to just about everyone. Townies are fun and easy to ride and come in a variety of cool styles and colours. Prices start at $599.99 for a basic single-speed model. Electra also has an electric version of the Townie called the Townie Go! that features pedal assist technology, which Wayne is shown picking up from the shop. Older riders love having the pedal-assist option for those big hills and longer rides.

Trek Verve

Another popular comfort bike is the Trek Verve. The Verve is an easy riding bike designed for a comfortable ride on roads, paths, and city streets. All models in the Verve family feature relaxed upright geometry, a padded saddle and suspension seat post, tires that are both wide and stable, and a light, aluminium frame. Compared to the Townie, Verves have a slightly shorter wheelbase, which translates into a faster, lighter bike. This sporty bike comes with a step-through option for easy mounting and dismounting. As well, there is pedal-assist version of the Verve to accommodate longer rides and tougher terrains.

Giant Cypress DX

The Giant Cypress DX is another great bicycle for older adults. The main difference between the Cypress DX and other comfort bikes is the front suspension. The Cypress DX rides like a dream with front suspension and a suspension seatpost, working to smooth out rough roads and keep riders comfortably cruising for hours at a time. With a functional yet elegant design and a lightweight aluminum frame, the Cypress DX is a pleasure to ride both on the road and on the trail. This bike is great for older adults who want something a little faster, as the tires are slightly thinner than those that come with the Townie or Verve. The stem is adjustable which allows riders to find the perfect position.

Liv Flourish FS

Giant also offers a version of the Cypress especially for women, called the Liv Flourish FS. Along with a step-through frame for easy on and off, the Flourish FS features a saddle tailored for slightly wider hips and handlebars cut down for narrower shoulders. That being said, just because the Flourish FS is a "women's specific" model does not mean that men do not ride it. The saying goes:' if the bike fits, take it for a ride!"
